The battle for the outside cornerback position to replace Darius Slay opposite Quinyon Mitchell, as well as the new starting right guard position to replace Mekhi Becton have been grabbing all the headlines when it comes to the 2025 Philadelphia Eagles primary training camp battles. Perhaps this is warranted, as these are key starting spots for the Eagles as they aim to defend their dominant Super Bowl triumph from 2024.
Right guard and outside corner aren't the only starting jobs up for grabs entering training camp. With Josh Sweat leaving in free agency to reunite with former Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon in the desert with the Arizona Cardinals, there is a hole at the primary pass-rusher slot opposite Nolan Smith.
While still a starting spot, perhaps the fact that the Eagles have been using a platoon approach when it comes to their pass-rushers the last decade or so could be why this isn't getting enough attention. Having said that, having a deep and dominant pass rush is crucial in the NFL, as the world just saw the last time a football game was played in Super Bowl LIX.
Speaking of Super Bowl LIX, that may be another reason why this battle is a bit on the back burner. In that game, Jalyx Hunt recorded a 0.5 sack and also had another one in the Eagles' playoff win in the snowy classic against the Los Angeles Rams. The way Hunt, a rookie third-round pick a year ago out of Houston Christian, improved progressively as the season progressed has many already penciling him in as the next starter on the edge.
That isn't to say he won't have to earn it though.
The Eagles and their fans are familiar with Azeez Ojulari. He has spent the last four seasons with the New York Giants, recording 22 sacks in that time. He recorded eight in his rookie year, a record for Giants rookies, and that is saying something considering the pass-rushers who have gone through that franchise. However, that is also his career high, as Qiulari has battled injuries ever since.
The point is, though, Qiulari is far from a scrub. It will be interesting to see what he can accomplish with this organization and whether he can stay healthy. Granted both should be seeing the field a fair amount if the Eagles still rotate guys in and out to rush the passer. There still will be one that plays more than the other, though, and gets their name and face introduced with the starting lineups for the television audience.
Training camp is finally here for the Philadelphia Eagles, and this is one position battle worth keeping tabs on. After all, rushing the passer is a part of this franchise's culture.
