While the Detroit Lions could be looking at their upcoming bout against the New York Giants as a sure-thing victory, they'd be foolish to do so.
Looking at how poorly their offensive line has held up against teams with strong pass rushing and linebacker play in recent weeks, the Lions have to be concerned about the Giants' ability to get to Jared Goff in the pocket and throw off the Lions' offense for the contest. Despite their 2-9 record, the Giants play hard on defense, and they've got nothing to lose or gain against a team like Detroit.
On the flip side, Detroit has a ton to lose as this is their final game before they face off with the Green Bay Packers on Thanksgiving Day. If they can get this win, they head into that Packers game with a 7-4 record and a firm chance at claiming the NFC North title. With a loss, they'd stumble into the Packers game with a sense of necessary urgency.
New York drafted Abdul Carter out of Penn State at 3rd overall in the 2025 NFL Draft, but he hasn't been the highlight of the Giants' pass rush this season. Brian Burns is the real menace for New York's defense, having notched 13 sacks so far on the season - that's good for 2nd in the NFL. In addition to Burns, the team has Dexter Lawrence anchoring the defensive line.
Between Burns, Carter, and Lawrence, the Lions could have their hands full. Their interior offensive line has been an issue, with Graham Glasgow not providing much pass protection as of late up the middle.
While the rookie Tate Ratledge has been a reliable anchor for the iOL, it's been injuries to Christian Mahogany and Taylor Decker that have thrown things off kilter for the previous strength of the Lions' offense.
While their pass rush is an issue, though, their run-stopping hasn't been as impressive. The Giants are allowing 149.9 rushing yards per game, which is where Detroit can really hurt them on offense. Jahmyr Gibbs stands to have another huge performance for the Lions, especially with Dan Campbell putting a ton of emphasis on his involvement in the offense as a receiver and runner.
Detroit just has to ensure they're putting their best effort forward in this upcoming NFC game ahead of a tight turnaround for a Thursday afternoon contest. Their propensity for injuries will truly be put to the test this coming weekend and next week, especially to their offensive line.
