The Miami Dolphins hosted the national championship game this year, but they might not get a Super Bowl anytime soon.
According to the team’s owner, Hard Rock Stadium has fallen short of the NFL’s hosting standards.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell only this week indicated that the Cleveland Browns’ new Huntington Bank Field could become an SB venue once it opens in 2029.
Hard Rock, on the other hand, has been pulled from the rotation.
The league has a set of criteria for Super Bowl hosting, including a minimum 70,000 seating capacity. It goes without saying that the host city must have a team in the league.
An average gameday temperature of at least 50 degrees Fahrenheit or a domed roof is also among the requirements.
Miami isn’t in line to host beyond 2029, having last held a Super Bowl in 2020.
“The one thing that suffered is Miami hasn’t gotten a Super Bowl here, and we normally have one every five years,” owner Stephen Ross told the South Florida Business Journal this week.
“Miami is not really in line for one. It’s always exciting to have the Super Bowl but that was before we had all the other events.”
The next three SB locations are already set.
The big game is headed back to Inglewood’s SoFi Stadium in 2027, while the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta will play host in 2028. The Super Bowl is set to return to Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas in 2029.
Sadly, Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium is out… for now.
“Miami has by far the best weather,” Ross lamented. “It’s in their best interest to have one here but at this point they don’t believe we meet all the requirements and the demands.”
Of course, changes can be made, and Ross has promised that the venue will eventually be up to date.
“We are looking at how to make improvements,” he said. “I want to make the stadium always feel like a new stadium, we are looking at what the next phase will be and making the fan experience that much better.”
Time will tell.
