One of the Jets' top rookies has coaches cursing when they talk about him because he has so much potential

The New York Jets are looking to turn the page under new head coach Aaron Glenn and rookie tight end Mason Taylor figures to be a key part of the process.

Taylor was taken with the 42nd overall pick in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft. He's an extremely athletic tight end that can play in-line and he can be split out in the slot or even on the perimeter. New offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand, who hails from Ben Johnson's offense, should find plenty of effective ways to utilize him both this year and beyond.

There's plenty of reason for optimism and one veteran NFL coach recently told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler exactly how much he's looking forward to seeing what Taylor can do:

"He's f---ing awesome. He was my No. 2 tight end [behind Chicago's Colston Loveland]. He's athletic, he's young (21) and he's got upside in the passing game." -- Veteran NFL offensive coach

Justin Fields and Taylor should form a quick connection

Fields had an up-and-down career in Chicago, but one of the more consistent trends was his connection with tight end Cole Kmet. The duo formed a quick bond and combined for 133 receptions that led to 1,384 yards and 10 touchdowns during their time together with the Bears.

Kmet and Taylor aren't the same player in terms of overall ability - Taylor has more upside and versatility. That's not taking anything away from Kmet, either. He's a very good player who respectively ranks ninth, 10th, and ninth in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns among all tight ends since 2021.

There's also the Lions' history of how they use tight ends, mainly Sam LaPorta. Egstrand is sure to bring over some ideas and concepts he learned under Johnson, which only aids this future partnership.

Everything is set up for Taylor to have a big year, it's just about going out and making it happen.
