One of the Packers' most inspiring stories of 2025 is complete as versatile all-around player secures a roster spot

When the Green Bay Packers decided to move Bo Melton from wide receiver to cornerback, it looked like one of those decisions made when a player has no real shot to make the team as a last chance. Well, Melton took care of that final shot and made sure to make the most out of it. As the Packers built their initial 53-man roster, Melton has made the team.

The player himself had hinted at it with a post on Instagram stories even before the official initial roster was released.

"When you watch him through the course of drills, the skillset is there," head coach Matt LaFleur said during training camp. "It’s just getting the adequate number of reps to go and get comfortable out there, I would say, at a very, very difficult position to play. I’m really pleased not only with how he’s approached it, but how he’s executed."

In the preseason, Bo Melton played 80 defensive snaps—something he hadn't done since high school. He was targeted six times, allowing four catches for 38 yards, but with a pass breakup and allowing an 84.0 passer rating. Melton could still play wide receiver eventually, but cornerback is now his primary position.

"We know what he is as a receiver and what he can do for us as a receiver on special teams. He's been obviously a very important part of our football team the last couple of years. We’re excited to see what he might be able to do at corner for us on defense," general manager Brian Gutekunst said at the start of camp. "I think we switched his number to 16 because that looks a little better than the 80 he was running out there in camp. But he will spend most of his time, particularly these first three or four weeks, at corner."

A wide receiver out of Rutgers, Bo Melton was a seventh-round pick by the Seattle Seahawks in 2022. After starting his rookie regular season on the Seahawks' practice squad, Melton was signed off by the Packers. In 2023, he spent most of the year on the Packers' PS, but was elevated and had a monster game against the Minnesota Vikings, with six receptions for 105 yards and a touchdown.

He's been on the active roster since. But he barely played last year, with only eight receptions for 91 yards in the entire season. That and the new additions the Packers made at receiver prompted the change, and Melton couldn't have taken more advantage of the process.
