One person has constantly been at the center of criticism for Chiefs' offensive inconsistencies over the past two years

The Kansas City Chiefs have suffered a significant regression on offense over the past two seasons.

After finishing in the top five of the NFL in total offense from 2018-2022, including ranking first three times over that span, the Chiefs fell to ninth in 2023 and 17th in 2024.

There's plenty of blame to go around for their offensive struggles, such as injuries and failed draft picks. An argument could also be made for poor coaching, which is the direction many Chiefs fans on social media have gone when it comes to offensive coordinator Matt Nagy.

After serving as Kansas City's quarterbacks coach in 2022, Nagy was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2023 following the departure of Eric Bieniemy. Nagy's success as the Chiefs' offensive coordinator back in 2017 led him to become the head coach of the Chicago Bears, but he was fired after four seasons.

Part of the reason Nagy was let go by the Bears was due to their struggles on offense, and those same criticisms are now flaring up again. Many believe that both quarterback Patrick Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid could benefit from replacing Nagy with somebody outside of Reid's coaching tree, potentially giving them a different perspective and breathing new life into the offense.

Based off Reid's history of constructing his coaching staff, that is very unlikely to happen. Reid almost always promotes from within, and he is loyal to his guys almost a a fault. The only significant change he has made during his 12-year tenure in K.C. is replacing Bob Sutton with Steve Spagnuolo at defensive coordinator, and it took the Chiefs' defense being historically bad in 2018 to do so.

Spagnuolo coached under Reid during their time with the Philadelphia Eagles, so even that move was made with familiarity. With the Chiefs' success as a whole since Nagy took over as OC, and given that he was a HC candidate for multiple teams this past month, he isn't likely going anywhere.

K.C. has several challenges personnel-wise to deal with on offense this offseason, such as finding a franchise left tackle, whether or not to retain right guard Trey Smith, and finding quality depth at wide receiver and running back. There's also star tight end Travis Kelce's impending retirement decision. It remains to be seen if there will be any shakeup within the coaching staff, but history suggests there won't be any major ones.
