Philadelphia Eagles fans won't forget how great the 2024 season was after the team won its second Super Bowl in franchise history. Now it's about whether they can repeat as champions.
Leading the charge at quarterback was Jalen Hurts, who had one of the best seasons of his career. The stats won't blow anyone away, but Hurts was efficient and protected the football, as evidenced by his career-high 68.7% completion percentage and a quarterback rating of 103.7. He capped it off with a stellar Super Bowl performance that earned him the game's Most Valuable Player award.
The Eagles are in for another season where they should be Super Bowl contenders, but what would be holding them back from repeating?
Bleacher Report writer Brad Gagnon shared one thing that would hold each quarterback and their teams back in 2025. For Hurts and the Eagles, it's about the Super Bowl curse that can derail their 2025 season.
"There's little reason not to get behind Hurts and the stacked Eagles, aside from the fact that 19 of the last 20 Super Bowl champions have failed to repeat."
The last time the Eagles won the Super Bowl, their next season in 2018 ended with the team finishing with a 9-7 record and barely squeaking into the playoffs. They were able to upset the Chicago Bears in the NFC Wild Card, but an Alshon Jeffery drop cost them the NFC Divisional Round game against the New Orleans Saints.
Looking back at the 2023 season after the Philadelphia Eagles lost the Super Bowl to the Kansas City Chiefs, it's clear that they got off to a 10-1 start, but they won some ugly games. The team fell apart, winning just one of the next seven games, before being blown out by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC Wild Card game.
The Eagles have a modest track record in Super Bowls, with only two wins, but they have a chance to make history and repeat for the first time. Hurts has all the capabilities to get the job done with Saquon Barkley, A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, and Dallas Goedert on offense to work with. One thing that could hold the team back is their young defense and how they will progress with veterans like Brandon Graham, Darius Slay, and C.J. Gardner-Johnson no longer in the picture.
There will be doubters that the Eagles can repeat with the Washington Commanders on their heels in the NFC, but Philadelphia has all the talent to be just the ninth team in NFL history to be repeat champions.
