Heading into the final year of his contract, running back James Conner said last May that he wanted to remain with the Pittsburgh Steelers. That wasn't meant to be, however, and he's now looking to extend his NFL career via free agency.
NFL Network's Tom Pelissero (h/t Nick Shook) and others report that the ball-carrier is meeting with the Arizona Cardinals and expected to undergo a physical. Conner suffered a non-serious offseason turf-toe injury but should be recovered by June.
Conner earned his only Pro Bowl nod in 2018 when he rushed for 973 yards with 12 touchdowns and 55 receptions for 497 yards and a score. He's often been slowed by physical setbacks throughout his career, though, and the Steelers allowed him to hit free agency last month due to salary-cap issues.
Conner famously battled Hodgkin's lymphoma during his stint at the University of Pittsburgh but was declared cancer-free in 2016. His resume includes a lengthy and worrisome injury history at a time when the salary cap is dropping by nearly $16 million due to financial losses related to the COVID-19 pandemic, and it's assumed many front offices believe younger and cheaper running backs are better investments this offseason.
Wherever Conner signs, he'll likely put pen to paper on a one-year "prove it" deal.
