The Green Bay Packers will finally add another quarterback to the mix. According to TSN's Dave Naylor, the Packers offered a contract to Canadian quarterback Taylor Elgersma, and they expect him to accept the deal. He would be the 11th undrafted player signed to the roster.
Elgersma played college football under Canadian rules at University of Wilfrid Laurier. The Packers saw him in action at the Senior Bowl and invited him to the rookie minicamp last week . The signal caller was expected to attend the Buffalo Bills rookie minicamp as well.
"He's got a very live arm, and you can see that on tape. Obviously, he played at the Senior Bowl and (passing game coordinator Jason) Vrable got to see him there," Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said during the rookie minicamp. "He was in two of the senior games, we had them in a 30 visit. Another guy that loves football, watching him throw, he's got a live arm. There's a lot to like about him."
With the potential addition of Elgersma, the Packers will have four quarterbacks on the 90-man roster, with Jordan Love, Malik Willis, and Sean Clifford already in the fold. All the other three finished last season on the active roster.
As a developmental project, Elgersma will most likely fight for a practice squad spot with Clifford, a fifth-round pick two years ago.
Elgersma is a toolsy quarterback. He has the size and arm to play at a higher level, even though his game isn't refined—and it will demand a period to adjust, since the Canadian game allows 12 players and forward motion before the snap, for example.
A to Z Sports draft analyst Destin Adams wrote about Elgersma after the Senior Bowl.
"Elgersma has a great frame for a QB and has great arm strength. But he has struggled with accuracy and has made some bone-headed decisions during team drills, some resulting in interceptions. I wouldn't be shocked if an NFL team takes a chance on him because his tools are so intriguing, but he seems far away from even being a backup-caliber QB in the NFL." — Destin Adams.
Listed at 6-6 and 212 pounds, Taylor Elgersma played in 39 games for Laurier, completing 72% of his passes for 10,230 yards, 76 touchdowns, and 28 interceptions. He led the Golden Hawks to the championship game for U Sports, called the Vanier Cup. They lost 22-17 to Laval.
"It's really a challenge and what it comes down to is: Do they have the physical tools to compete in the NFL? In terms of the actual level of competition, I think it's comparable to our Division III here in the United States or Division II, some of our lower levels," said former director of the Senior Bowl Jim Nagy. "I know he's got the right physical stuff. He's got all the size and arm length and hand size—the stuff NFL quarterbacks tend to have—and the mobility. What's it going to look like when there's 21 other moving parts on the field? There's no way to know that until you get them down here."
Jordan Love and Malik Willis are roster locks. Since 2021, the Packers have kept two quarterbacks on the 53-man roster for the most part—last year, Sean Clifford only got promoted to the active roster late in the season, after spending most of the year on the practice squad.
If someone shows incredible talent, the Packers could reconsider the strategy—in 2020, the team kept Aaron Rodgers, Tim Boyle, and Jordan Love all on the active roster, but it was a very specific set of circumstances.
In 2024, the Packers had three quarterbacks during training camp—Love, Clifford, and seventh-round pick Michael Pratt. When the team acquired Malik Willis, both Clifford and Pratt got waived, and Clifford returned to the practice squad.
