The Packers are taking an unorthodox approach at cornerback.
After releasing former Pro Bowler Jaire Alexander, Green Bay immediately attempted to convert wide receiver Bo Melton to cornerback in hopes of filling the void, and the 26-year-old has been making waves and making plays in the secondary throughout a strong training camp this summer.
According to ESPN Packers reporter Rob Demovsky, Melton has been impressing in his new role.
“While he doesn’t have an interception yet, in training camp,” Demovsky says of Melton. “In 12 practices, he’s had plenty of pass breakups and has gotten his share of reps with the No. 1 defense and gone against some of the Packers’ top receivers.”
Melton, 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds getting reps with the first-team defense is a clear indication that he is holding his own in a new position to the point where defensive coordinator Jeff. Hafley could consider starting him when the regular season kicks off in September.
“Melton has even impressed himself,” Demovsky points out. “With how quickly he’s acclimated.”
With 24 receptions for 309 yards and one touchdown to date in his career as a receiver, Melton’s home might be at cornerback and he might be on the cusp of making a big impact for the Packers’ defense this season.
