The bye week couldn’t come at a much better time for the Packers.
After dropping a stunning and heartbreaking loss to the Cleveland Browns, on a walk-off field goal, followed by having to fight and claw back against the Dallas Cowboys just to fly home with a 40-40 tie, head coach Matt LaFleur and staff have seen some pretty big concerns emerge over the past two games.
While many of the Packers’ woes on offense could take care of themselves once the likes of Zach Tom and Aaron Banks return along the offensive line, there are still some big worries for an offense that has struggled down the stretch the past two weeks.
Suddenly, the bombastic and disruptive pass rush that opened the season against the Detroit Lions can’t generate consistent pressure and the offense has gone into late-game slumps.
Finding a way to put teams away is the biggest worry head coach Matt LaFleur and the Packers must tackle during the bye week, before returning to action against the Bengals, according to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky.
“Perhaps most importantly, they need to figure out a way to close out games,” Demovsky writes. “Who knows what this tie will mean down the road, but the Packers blew fourth-quarter leads in back-to-back games for the first time since Weeks 14-15 of the 2010 season against the Lions and Patriots. This after they blew a double-digit lead with four minutes to play last week against the Browns.”
Finding a way back to playing a more complementary brand of football will be pivotal for LaFleur and the Packers, especially to help avoid close late-game scenarios where every mistake and incompletion is magnified and has become a concern the past two weeks.
