Packers’ CB answer is right in front of their face

The Green Bay Packers surprisingly released cornerback Jaire Alexander last month, and while Alexander’s roster spot had been in question all offseason long, it came at a rather awkward time.

Right now, the Packers don’t have much of an answer at the position. They signed Nate Hobbs in free agency, but their cornerback depth is beyond questionable. Are they really going to depend on Carrington Valentine to hold down a starting job? It seems unlikely.

The good news is that Green Bay does have some options available on the free-agent market, and one player stands out like a sore thumb: Stephon Gilmore.

Gilmore may not be the same superstar who won the Defensive Player of the Year award back in 2019, but he still managed a productive campaign with the Minnesota Vikings last season, registering 56 tackles, an interception and nine passes defended.

For the second straight year, the 34-year-old remains available deep into the offseason, with the veteran probably waiting for the perfect opportunity. It’s hard to envision a better fit than the Packers right now.

There are actually multiple intriguing options left on the open market, such as Asante Samuel Jr. and old friend Rasul Douglas. However, Samuel is recovering from neck surgery, and Douglas has definitely declined significantly and is probably more of a rotational piece rather than a starter at this stage.

Gilmore is unquestionably the most enticing avenue for Green Bay to pursue, and the fact that the Packers haven’t seemed to make much of an effort to sign him is strange, to say the least.

Perhaps Green Bay is weighing the idea of Gilmore behind closed doors, because it makes too much sense for the Packers to add the five-time Pro Bowler into their mix. It would represent a good match for both sides, as Gilmore would get to join a Super Bowl contender.
