Packers CB Jaire Alexander miffed he isn't among team captains

Green Bay Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander is miffed he is not a team captain.

Instead, quarterback Aaron Rodgers, running back Aaron Jones, tight end Marcedes Lewis, linebacker De’Vondre Campbell, defensive lineman Kenny Clark and safety Adrian Amos were chosen as Green Bay’s six-player leadership group. Rodgers, Lewis, Campbell, Clark and Amos were captains last season.

Alexander, who served as a team captain last season, told reporters last week that he felt slighted by his teammates.

“Yea, I did,” Alexander said, via WFRV’s Kyle Malzhan, when asked if he took the decision personally. “[I’m] happy for the guys who was voted team captain. I guess I didn’t make the cut this year, and I just got to keep working and doing what I need to do. That’s all I can control is being here right now.”

The 25-year-old cornerback missed 13 games last season after suffering a season-ending shoulder injury in Week 4 against the Pittsburgh Steelers that required surgery. He totaled 13 tackles, three passes defensed and an interception across four starts.

In each of his previous three seasons, Alexander posted double-digit pass breakups and at least 50 tackles.

Despite the time he missed, the Packers signed Alexander to a four-year, $84 million contract extension in May. His $21 million average annual salary makes him the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL.
