Wide receiver Christian Watson proved his value to the Packers‘ passing game last season, and just might be about to cash in on a major commitment from the organization in the months ahead.
Watson, 26, finished as Green Bay’s second-leading receiver last season, catching 55 passes for 611 yards, trailing only Romeo Doubs, who recently signed as a free agent with the New England Patriots, while tying a team-high six touchdown receptions.
As the regular season nears, Watson could be the next Packers star to ink a long-term contract extension.
Entering the final year of his contract, Watson is set to make $3.4 million in 2026, while counting $6.3 million against the cap.
According to PackersNews’ Pete Dougherty, Watson may need a strong season just to land an extension from the Packers, and he just might be on the outside looking in at elite receiver money handed down across the league.
“If Watson stays healthy and has a big year, and they haven’t extended him,” Dougherty writes for PackersNews. “Then they either have to franchise him, pay even bigger money or let a talented player walk.”
Dougherty suggests that Watson’s value may fall well below the $30 million annually that Jaxon Smith-Njigba is collecting from the Seattle Seahawks.
Regardless, the next few months will be fascinating to watch how Green Bay handles one of the top pass catchers in quarterback Jordan Love’s supporting cast.
