Go to the consensus big board, and the three cornerbacks evaluated to be first-round prospects are Travis Hunter, Will Johnson, and Jahdae Barron. There are some people who think Maxwell Hairston and Shavon Revel Jr. can be late first-rounders as well. But don't be surprised if Trey Amos from Ole Miss gets there, and the Green Bay Packers make more sense to him than you could expect.
During an appearance on "This is Football," The Athletic's draft analyst Dane Brugler was asked about players he thinks will go earlier than expected. Amos was his first mention.
"I'm going to say Trey Amos, the corner from Ole Miss. Over the summer, he was looked at as kind of a fifth- or sixth-round pick by scouts. He played at Alabama last season, didn't see a ton of action behind Terrion Arnold and Kool-Aid McKinstry, transfers to Ole Miss for his final season," Brugler said. "First-Team All-SEC, the ball production was outstanding. So I think things have really picked up for him based on the tape. And then ok, he goes to the Combine and he runs a lot better than expected, he tests a lot better than expected. Talking to multiple scouts that were there, they said his corner workout was exceptional. So 6-1, 195 pounds, 4'4 athlete. He can smother and press, he can play off, play zone, this is someone I think teams are looking at as an ascending player over the last six months. I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up in the first 30 picks." - Dane Brugler on This is Football.
The Packers have done extensive work on cornerbacks ahead of the draft, including first-round types. With Trey Amos in particular, Green Bay had a formal visit with him at the NFL Combine and had him in for a top 30 visit. He is a part of A to Z Sports' list of ideal Packers-type prospects in this class.
A to Z Sports' draft analyst Ryan Roberts highlighted Trey Amos' size profile, zone instincts, and competitiveness, three important aspects for Green Bay.
"It is a deep and talented cornerback class for the 2025 NFL Draft, and Amos is amongst the biggest risers," Roberts wrote. "Coming into the season, he was an afterthought after spending the 2023 season with Alabama. Due to his consistent play, and production, that has changed in a big way."
The Packers have an obvious need at cornerback. Despite having signed Nate Hobbs in free agency, the team lost Eric Stokes, Corey Ballentine, and Robert Rochell, and Jaire Alexander is expected to be traded or released at some point.
Right now, Kamal Hadden would be the fourth cornerback on the depth chart. They need to add bodies to the room.
"We need numbers right now, because we do have some free agents coming up," Brian Gutekunst had said after the season. "So we're gonna need numbers and kind of see where that room goes. Obviously, Ja will impact that as well. We'll just see how that goes."
At the NFL Combine, the Packers had formal visits with Amos, Texas' Jahdae Barron, Notre Dame's Benjamin Morrison, and East Carolina's Shavon Revel, all players that are expected to be in that early second round range.
Since Brian Gutekunst took over as the general manager in 2018, he has selected three defensive backs in the first round, cornerbacks Jaire Alexander (2018) and Eric Stokes (2021), plus safety Darnell Savage (2019).
