A previous report revealed that the Green Bay Packers planned "to work out a deal" to keep head coach Matt LaFleur, who currently is only under contract through next season. However, the two sides hadn't come to terms on an agreement when NFL insider Adam Schefter spoke about the matter during a Wednesday appearance on ESPN Milwaukee.
Per Wendell Ferreira of A to Z Sports, it sounds like there's a possibility that the Packers and LaFleur could soon part ways.
"There’s no deal right now, and it’s a negotiation," Schefter said. "When there’s a negotiation, and there’s no deal, there could be a breakthrough at any moment. ...They’ve been trying to do this for a little while and still have not gotten it figured out. The longer it lingers, the more you wonder where it’s going to go and how it’s going to result. The way I would interpret it right now is that it’s up in the air."
Star pass-rusher Micah Parsons and other Green Bay players voiced their support for LaFleur following the club's 31-27 wild-card playoff loss to the rival Chicago Bears, which featured the Packers blowing an 18-point lead. That said, LaFleur has yet to guide Green Bay to a single Super Bowl appearance since accepting the job in 2019. The Packers last played in an NFC Championship Game in January 2021.
Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio is among those who have noted that Green Bay could shop LaFleur to coach-needy teams. The Packers could then potentially pursue former Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh unless he finalizes a deal with the New York Giants.
"I do believe there’s a time limit, absolutely, because there are all these openings," Schefter added. "I firmly believe most places would have a high level of interest in Matt LaFleur. Now you’re saying the Packers part ways. I don’t know whether they wouldn’t hold him up and say, 'OK, Team X, you want him, give us a third-round pick or a second-round pick.'"
For reasons that may or may not be related to Harbaugh's availability, it certainly sounds like somebody within the Packers wants outsiders to know that the NFC North club could soon be in the market for a new head coach.
