Packers Defensive Coordinator Sends Clear Message About Edgerrin Cooper

In defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley's first season with the team last year, the Green Bay Packers allowed the sixth-fewest points per game (19.9) and sixth-fewest total yards per game (315.6).

A significant part of that success can be attributed to linebacker Edgerrin Cooper, who was a rookie last season.

Despite an injury-riddled first year, Cooper immediately established himself as one of Green Bay's most dominant defensive players.

Cooper suffered hip and hamstring injuries during his rookie season, causing him to miss three full games and limiting his snaps in many games where he did suit up.

When asked about what the second-year linebacker's next step is, Hafley did not hesitate in his response.

“Consistently," Hafley emphasized. "This is year two for him; he knows what it’s going to take, and he knows what he has to do now to stay healthy."

As a rookie, the Texas A&M product ranked as the 2nd-best pass-rushing linebacker behind only Bobby Wagner, with a 90.1 Pass Rush PFF Grade. He ranked as the 10th-best linebacker overall -- with an 84.0 PFF grade.

According to Hafley, Cooper is now close to 240 pounds, which is up from his rookie season playing weight of 229 pounds. The reasoning behind the bulk is to ensure he stays healthy and is right for the season's entirety.

“Now, when you sit with him in that room, I mean he’s locked in and he’s focused and now he knows what he’s doing. Your first rookie year can kinda be like survival mode a little bit too, so he just needs to be more consistent, he’s gotta stay healthy, and continue to improve. He’s a guy that we’re really excited about because he can do a lot of different things, too.

Led by arguably the most versatile linebacker room in the league, Hafley's defense will look to improve even further in 2025.

Cooper and Jaire Alexander's health, along with the additions of former Raiders cornerback Nate Hobbs and several incoming rookies, can make this defensive unit the absolute best in all of football.
