Packers’ Devonte Wyatt Building Off Of Late Rookie Season Success
MARK HOFFMAN/MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL / USA TODAY NETWORK

There have been a number of Green Bay Packers players that have stood out in the early going of training camp. One of the players that the team was hoping to see improvements from was defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt and he certainly hasn’t disappointed.

While training camp is only a week old, Wyatt has already made his impact felt. In the opinion of Brandon Carwile of Packers Wire, the 2022 first-round pick has the look of someone ready to take that second-year jump.

Wyatt has been overpowering the offensive lineman he has matched up against, showcasing remarkable power against Josh Myers and Jean Delance earlier this week. He knocked both players on their backsides, accomplishing his goal of sending a message to everyone.

“Just trying to prove my point,” Wyatt said of the two reps. “Just letting them know I’m here this year, and I’m not here to play. I got a point to prove.”

Second-year players are usually set up for major jumps in production. Wyatt is someone that has been legged as a breakout candidate and it makes a lot of sense. After being a part-time player behind Dean Lowry and Jarran Reed last season, Wyatt’s role will expand greatly with both players moving on.

While it was certainly frustrating to sit, it wasn’t something that Wyatt let get to him. He had learned how to deal with it from his time at Georgia, where he also had to sit in the early going before getting his chance.

“Basically, I was being patient,” he said of his first season. “I wasn’t frustrated because the same thing happened my freshman year, and it just takes time learning the playbook and getting comfortable with the scheme.”

It worked for Wyatt, as he responded with some great play when his number was called. With Lowry getting injured in Week 16, it was the former Bulldog who was called upon to replace him in the lineup. He played well, recording the first sack of his career in the process.

Looking to build off of that late-season momentum is a goal that Wyatt had entering the 2023 calendar. Thus far, he has accomplished that goal and continues to improve with each passing day.
