Packers expected to use franchise tag on Davante Adams

Aaron Rodgers is staying with the Green Bay Packers, and his decision will have a domino effect on the rest of the NFL. Davante Adams could be the first to feel it.

Rodgers agreed to a new contract with the Packers that is reportedly worth $200 million over four seasons . The deal will lower what was once a massive 2022 salary cap hit for Rodgers. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, the next step for the Packers will be to franchise tag Davante Adams.

Adams would prefer a long-term contract from the Packers, but the franchise tag will give the two sides more time to work something out. Now that the Packers have committed to Rodgers for several more seasons, the interest in locking up Adams long-term is likely mutual.

We already know of several teams that were expected to pursue Adams if he hit free agency. It is no surprise that the Packers are not planning to allow that to happen.

Rodgers and Adams have been arguably the best quarterback-wide receiver duo in the NFL for several seasons. The 29-year-old receiver caught 123 passes for 1,553 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2021.
