Packers Face Early 'Must Win' Against Wounded Bengals

The Packers have had a strange start to what has been a strange season in general. After starting off with two impressive wins against top NFC teams, they followed that up with a baffling loss and tie against teams they were heavily favored against. This turn of events has taken the perception of Green Bay from Super Bowl contenders back to that of fringe playoff contenders.

While I still believe they are more the former than the latter, the Packers do have some work to do to get back to that upper tier, and it starts with a bad Bengals squad coming to Lambeau this Sunday. Win convincingly and the season feels back on track. Win a tight game or do the unspeakable and lose? The questions get much louder about this roster and this coaching staffs ability to win when it matters most.

Lets take a look at a few things that must happen for Green Bay to right the ship.

You’re Better, Act Like It.

Too often over this season, and the past few seasons if we are being honest, the Packers have felt like a team that has played not to lose, instead of playing to win. It was on display last game against the Cowboys. The Packers are a better team than the Bengals by just about every metric:

To simplify – bottom left, really bad, upper right, really good. The Packers are better on offense, they’re better on defense. So go out there Sunday and call the game like it.

Throw The Damn Ball

Look, I get it. A good run game is a great thing to have, the Packers under LaFleur have typically been very good at running the ball, and you have a good running back. But this team at the moment simply cannot run block to save their lives. Josh Jacobs is a good back, but it’s hard to get anything going when he’s getting hit at or behind the line on every play.

This isn’t even really about the run game though. Its about a quarterback who is playing as good as anybody in the league right now.

This is a lot of numbers, but the takeaway is the Love has been absolutely on fire this year. Yes the Cleveland game was a disaster, but with Zach Tom and Aaron Banks hopefully back into the lineup, he should have the preferred offensive line in front of him for the first time since week one. So enough of the run-run-pass approach. Put the ball in your star QB’s hands and let him go win you the game.

Packers Defense Gets a Chance at Redemption

The last time Green Bay’s new and improved defense took the field, they got shredded by Dak Prescott. Now, it should be noted that Prescott played an incredible game, and sometimes in the NFL there’s simply nothing you can do about a QB getting on a heater.

That should not be the case this week. Because not only does the Packers defense have a chance to wash that last performance out of the fanbases collective mouth, they get to do it against the quarterback that beat them previously. The Bengals traded for Joe Flacco yesterday in an attempt to upgrade from backup disaster Jake Browning.

One of two things is going to happen on Sunday. Either the Packers get Jake Browning, and the defense should feast. Or the Packers face Joe Flacco, in the building for less than a week, in the midst of an awful season, and the defense should feast. The Bengals have two great receivers, but with their offensive line the pass rush needs to get home. They were closer than you think against the Cowboys, and whether its Browning or Flacco, neither is the QB that Prescott is.

Final Prediction

Since losing Joe Burrow, the Bengals have lost their next three games by an average score of almost 26 points. Those loses include games against Packers divisional opponents Detroit and Minnesota. Anything less than a beatdown will have even more people questioning whether this team has what it takes.

I think Green Bay comes out of its bye and reminds the league what this roster is capable of

Packers 31 – Bengals 10
