The Packers new league year begins today. Free agency closes the book on the previous season, as we look ahead to the next. What moves are the Packers expected to make?
On March 4th, the Packers began signing players to new contracts. Chris Brooks is staying with the team, a consistent and reliable running back three. Brooks signed a two-year deal, with potential earnings of up to $4.85 million.
The next several days brought more notable news with the trading of Colby Wooden to the Indianapolis Colts for Zaire Franklin. The team then made a statement on their center position by resigning Sean Rhyan to an extension.
Let’s take a look at the most recent trade the Packers made by trading Colby Wooden for Zaire Franklin. This trade signals that Quay Walker is gone. Walker had an up and down career in Green Bay. However, this last season was by far his best.
The pros are Franklin’s experience, leadership and a resume boasting a second team All Pro year in 2024. Nevertheless, the cons are glaring.
The team is already struggling on the defensive line, giving up Wooden in this trade is a puzzling choice. Wooden is only 25 years old, while Franklin will turn 30 this summer.
This move is out of the ordinary for Brian Gutekunst. Trading for a player who seems to be past his prime and into his thirties doesn’t make a ton of sense.
Gutekunst might be hoping a change of scenery is what Franklin needs. Franklin is coming off his worst season statistically, so he will have plenty of competition and a lot to prove entering training camp.
The main position of watch for free agency is the Packers situation at Center. However, that question was answered on Sunday. The Packers are opting to extend Sean Rhyan.
This shows trust in Rhyan’s ability. Rhyan should benefit from an entire offseason to lead at center. Expect competition in camp to come from Jacob Monk, and a potential draft pick.
Meanwhile, the Packers will be more involved in players departing during this free agency period. Malik Willis will garner a massive contract and is expected to be a week-one starter.
Quay Walker is gone with the signing of Franklin. As expected, Romeo Doubs did not reach an agreement with the team and will have plenty of interest.
Other notable players to hit free agency include Rasheed Walker, Kingsley Enagbare, and John FitzPatrick.
Overall, the new league year is an exciting time for every team. It is the first glimpse into expectations for September, and the Packers have plenty of moves that will keep us talking all offseason long.
