The Green Bay Packers control much of their own destiny as the final stretch to the postseason begins in earnest Thursday against the Detroit Lions, despite facing the NFL’s most grueling remaining schedule.
Regardless of whether coordinator Jeff Hafley’s defense continues to tighten the screws or the running game finds an identity, few players are more vital to the Packers finishing strong and making the playoffs than quarterback Jordan Love.
No team faces a more grueling stretch of games to close out the season than the Packers, whose opponents boast a combined .636 winning percentage, including elite defenses such as the Lions’, Denver Broncos’ and Baltimore Ravens’.
However, the Packers need significantly more from Jordan Love if Green Bay is going to finish strong enough to make the postseason.
“Getting quarterback Jordan Love back on track,” ESPN’s Rob Demovsky writes is the biggest item on head coach Matt LaFleur’s to-do list. “He was one of the most accurate passers during the first seven games of the season, completing 70.9% of his passes with 13 touchdowns and two interceptions. In the past three games, Love’s completion rate dropped to 60.8% with two touchdowns.”
There is little question that Love is going to need to be better, but Green Bay also needs the playmakers around their young quarterback to step up.
Whether it is getting Matthew Golden back to being fully healthy, Romeo Doubs becoming more consistent, or Christian Watson continuing to improve– off finishing Sunday’s win over the Minnesota Vikings as the Packers’ highest-graded player, from PFF, Love’s supporting cast needs to step up in a big way, as well.
If not, Green Bay may not make it through the upcoming gauntlet and be left out of the cold when January arrives.
