The Green Bay Packers' push to get the infamous "tush push" play banned from the NFL has failed, with the team failing to get more than 75 percent of the votes needed to pass the ban through for the 2025 season.
It's a small blow to the Packers, who seemed to have had the vote all locked up ahead of Wednesday's meeting with owners on the issue. Reporters like The Athletic's Dianna Russini had said as early as Wednesday morning that it seemed to have enough support to pass, but then she reported that same afternoon that the vote had failed.
The tush push was made famous by the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles, who began using it back 2023. The "Brotherly Shove" as it's affectionately known as became a huge headache for teams like the Packers who struggled to stop its effectiveness in short yardage situations.
It's a bit of an injury risk, which is probably why many owners were originally on board with the idea of getting rid of it, but it sounds like pride definitely got in the way on the final vote that allowed it to continue as a legal play in 2025. Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell had commented on the play back in March, saying that he'd rather just find a way to "stop" the play from happening than banning it altogether.
The Lions were, of course, revealed as one of the teams that helped keep the tush push a legal play. The New York Jets, New England Patriots, Baltimore Ravens, and Lions were four initial teams revealed by ESPN's Adam Schefter as those who sided with the Eagles to keep it legal.
Teams that sided with the Eagles included the Ravens, Patriots, Jets and Lions.

It makes total sense that Detroit would be among the teams looking to both shirk the Packers and support the Eagles. They're a gritty team defensively, and Campbell is not the type of coach to not want to get dirty in the trenches when it's all said and done. This play is the perfect opportunity to do so.
Detroit has somehow found a way to help hand Green Bay a loss before they even face off with one another in Week 1 of the 2025 season. That's pretty impressive. It'll be even more impressive if the Lions manage to get a few tush push plays off behind their great O-line in that season opener.
