Packers have extra incentive to pursue a Davante Adams reunion after a sequence of facts comes together

A year after signing wide receiver Davante Adams to a two-year, $44 million contract in free agency, the Los Angeles Rams are open to moving on from the former All-Pro weapon. Head coach Sean McVay admitted that the team is willing to trade Adams this offseason, and the veteran has been communicated of those circumstances.

While it's ultimately unlikely to happen, a potential reunion with the Green Bay Packers would always be an intriguing proposition.

Incentive to make it happen

Even before McVay saying the Rams could trade Davante, the Packers and any other potential acquiring team has an extra incentive to pull the trigger on the move.

Even though Adams is set to make $24 million in 2026, the Rams have already triggered a $6 million roster bonus on the fifth day of the new league year. This means Los Angeles can't move that part of his salary to a new team, which would absorb only $18 million in salary.

It's not a small amount of money, but it's much more in line with what Adams is at this point of his career. He is 33, played 14 games last season, and generated 60 catches for 789 yards. He led the NFL with 14 receiving touchdowns — even with a limited volume due to play alongside Puka Nacua.

Davante Adams played his first eight NFL seasons on the Green Bay Packers. In 2022, he was set to become a free agent, but the Packers franchise tagged him, then traded him to the Las Vegas Raiders for first- and second-round picks — and Adams himself requested that move.

After two and a half seasons in Las Vegas, Davante was traded to the New York Jets to play with Aaron Rodgers during the 2024 season. Released by the Jets last offseason, he was rumored to be back in Green Bay, but opted to sign with the Rams instead and reached the NFC Championship Game.

Now, he has one year left on his deal with the Rams — but it's up in the air if he will play out that deal in Los Angeles.

The Packers lost Romeo Doubs in free agency, so adding a high-level receiver could be even more impactful. The problem is that the roster has many receivers on contract years (Christian Watson, Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, Skyy Moore), and adding an older receiver with one year left on his current deal wouldn’t solve the long-term questions.
