Packers HC Matt LaFleur's Seat is Getting Hot

Following an embarrassing 35-14 loss at Lambeau Field to the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday, September 24, the Green Bay Packers dropped to 1-2 on the young season, and this loss should have head coach Matt LaFleur on the hot seat.

The Packers blew a big lead in Week 1 against the Minnesota Vikings, barely squeaked by the New York Jets in a Week 2 overtime win, and then got blown out at home by the Falcons in Week 3.

The Packers have looked absolutely brutal this season, and the coach could easily be canned if things continue like this, as there are only 17 games in the NFL season, and so every win and loss helps and hurts the standings so much.

That’s why Green Bay’s front office can’t wait too long if they decide to make a move on the sidelines, and why LaFleur’s tenure in Green Bay could soon be over if the team loses its Week 4 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Packers Disappointing Dating Back to Last Season’s Playoffs

The Packers should have considered firing LaFleur after last season’s playoff debacle where they blew a massive lead to the Chicago Bears and got bounced from the postseason.

Taking a 21-3 lead into halftime, the Bears ended up beating the Packers 31-27 in the NFC Wild Card Round to knock them out of the postseason for good.

However, instead of moving on from LaFleur following the brutal loss, the Packers signed him to a contract extension, and you have to wonder why.

During his career as the Packers’ head coach, LaFleur has compiled a 77-42-1 regular-season record with the club for a .646 win percentage.

While that’s a solid record during the regular season, LaFleur’s teams have not won when it matters, as he’s just 3-6 in the playoffs as Green Bay’s head coach.

The head coach is only one cog in the entire machine, and it wouldn’t be fair to completely blame LaFleur for the Packers’ misfortunes, as you can also blame general manager Brian Gutekunst for putting together a flawed roster for LaFleur to coach.

But the truth is, it’s a lot easier to fire the coach than trade all the players, and the GM would obviously rather fire the coach than take the fall for himself.

Right now, LaFleur is likely safe since he just signed that contract extension.

But if the team loses to the Buccaneers in Week 4 to drop to 1-3 on the young season, no one should be surprised if the Packers’ front office decides that they need to make a move.
