The NFL trade deadline is rapidly approaching, and the Packers could be in a position to buy, furthering their all-in mentality that began the moment GM Brian Gutekunst acquired Micah Parsons in a blockbuster with the Dallas Cowboys.
As the deadline approaches, the Packers could look to clear a bit of a logjam at wide receiver, that’s developed thanks in part to first-round rookie Matthew Golden’s emergence, and the anticipated returns of Christian Watson and Jayden Reed in the weeks ahead.
Likewise, bolstering the offensive line and linebacking corps could be a top priority for Gutekunst, if Green Bay intends to buy.
Over at AtoZ Sports, Titans beat reporter Easton Freeze and Packers beat writer Wendell Ferreira argue that Green Bay shipping wide receiver Dontayvion Wicks to Tennessee in exchange for cornerback Roger McCreary could be a perfect fit for both sides.
“I wouldn’t say McCreary is the perfect trade target because he’s more of a slot,” Wendell writes for AtoZ Sports. “Which the Packers have several, but his alignment flexibility to move outside is something Green Bay truly values — and that’s why the team gave Hobbs a four-year, $48 million deal in free agency.
“McCreary doesn’t have the athletic profile the Packers would prefer, but they don’t care that much about it when the player has already been in the NFL — the pro scouts act differently than the college department.”
Adding cornerback depth to a position where the Packers have had some success in Jeff Hafley’s defense could be a key priority for Gutekunst, especially in a conference that could present the likes of Amon-Ra St. Brown, Justin Jefferson, A.J. Brown, Terry McLaurin, and others on the road to a Super Bowl.
Likewise, Pro Football Focus lists McCreary as a top-30 cornerback in the sport, and he’s posted 14 total tackles and one interception so far this season.
McCreary’s versatility could infuse some significant playmaking ability into the back end of Hafley’s defense, improving a position that is pivotal to his scheme’s success.
