The Green Bay Packers have struggled to gain traction over the past few seasons. Despite remaining a regular playoff team and making the postseason last year, they endured a lopsided loss to the Chicago Bears and were eliminated in the Wild Card round. On top of that, reports suggest a potential parting of ways with head coach Matt LaFleur and ongoing locker room tensions, leaving the team’s direction in question.
Pete Dougherty, a Packers insider, discussed possible locker room problems in his latest mailbag. He noted that even though LaFleur mentioned these issues without being asked, he believes the situation in Green Bay is not unusual compared with challenges seen across other NFL locker rooms.
One challenge the Packers faced involved players expressing frustration over their assigned roles, both on offense and defense.
Dougherty also noted that teams typically handle dissatisfied players in one of two ways: either move them out or ensure the coaching staff communicates clearly, openly, and honestly about each player’s role. Matt LaFleur indicated that this is exactly how he approached the issue, acknowledging that it is a constant, ongoing responsibility.
“He said there were players last season who were disappointed with their roles, and LaFleur’s quote was ‘I think that took a toll on the team,’” Matt Schneidman also said during a separate report.
The primary goal for coaches is to maximize what each player can contribute. Broadening roles can be an effective way to motivate, but it can also create tension, as some players may struggle with adjustments to how they are normally utilized.
There is growing concern among Cheeseheads that Matt LaFleur’s influence in the locker room may be starting to weaken. With that in mind, the Packers will be under pressure to deliver results in the 2026 season, or notable changes to the roster and coaching staff could soon follow.
