What had been a mostly uneventful offseason for the Green Bay Packers took an unwanted turn.
Star running back Josh Jacobs was arrested on five counts related to domestic abuse, and while he was ultimately released, there's still an ongoing investigation.
As such, the former Las Vegas Raiders star might still not be in the clear, raising some doubts about his availability early in the season.
That's why Jordan Love didn't want to get into the details, though he admitted the Packers had internal discussions on the matter.
“Everyone knows what the situation is there. We’ve talked but obviously the details — everyone’s keeping that under wraps right now, out of respect for the situation and obviously all the legal stuff that’s going to be playing out,” Love said, per The Athletic's Matt Schneidman. “But it’s great to have Josh here with us, being able to work with us and getting back to work. But yeah, kind of everybody’s just waiting and letting it play out on its own.”
Love addressed the elephant in the room and admitted that the team still doesn't know whether Jacobs will be suspended or if this will be the end of it. Still, they'll focus on what they can control.
“There’s always questions,” Love said. “I was shocked when I saw it. Like I said, it’s one of those things we’re going to let it play out. There’s a lot of uncertainty when you hear something like that of what might happen.”
Jacobs is coming off a somewhat down season by his standards. He dealt with a knee injury and subpar run-blocking, amassing just 929 rushing yards, per Pro Football Reference.
However, he had 13 rushing touchdowns, and he's the centerpiece of Matt LaFleur's balanced offense. Not having him out there would be a massive hit, especially after losing backup Emanuel Wilson in free agency.
Given the complex and delicate nature of the situation, it might be too early to jump to conclusions or speculate about his future.
Still, the Packers must prepare for any and all scenario, including the possibility of not having their leading ball-carrier on the field to start the season.
