A rising coaching star has left the Green Bay Packers for a bigger job with another NFC team.
On Thursday, the Philadelphia Eagles announced their hiring of Green Bay quarterbacks coach Sean Mannion to be their next head coach. Philadelphia’s decision to hire Mannion came after two interviews with the former Oregon State Beavers star quarterback.
“I’m thrilled to have Sean Mannion on board as the new offensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles,” Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni said of his team’s addition of Mannion (via Philadelphia’s official website).
“My goal throughout this process was to operate with an open mind regarding the future of our offense to find the best fit for the Eagles. Over the last few weeks, I had an opportunity to meet with a number of talented candidates and great offensive minds. I am appreciative of the time I was able to spend with each of them. Some came with years of experience running an offense and calling plays. Others were young, sharp, and dynamic coaches on the rise. I felt it was important to be patient and thorough to allow the right fit to reveal himself to us. Sean did just that.”
The 33-year-0ld Mannion was regarded by some as a potential next head coach of Green Bay, but for now, he will focus entirely on his new gig with the Eagles, who were eliminated from the 2025 NFL playoffs by the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Wild Card Round.
Before transitioning into the coaching realm, Mannion appeared in 14 NFL games, including three starts. Taken by the then-St. Louis Rams in the 2015 NFL Draft, Mannion joined the Packers coaching staff in 2024 before succeeding Tom Clements as the team’s QB coach.
