The Packers finalized their coaching staff this week, highlighting the key schemes and personnel. The offseason brought massive changes as former Defensive Coordinator Jeff Hafley became the Head Coach of the Miami Dolphins.

Special Teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia also stepped down. Bisaccia took over the coordinator role for Clemson. This made two important jobs vacant, making the right hire became even more vital.

LaFleur made the hires of Jonathan Gannon for Defensive Coordinator, and Cam Achord for Special Teams coordinator.

The direction of the hires of staff also give insight into the plans for the upcoming season. Most notably, the promotion of DeMarcus Covington to Assistant Head Coach of Defense and has switched from defensive line to outside linebackers’ coach.

This shows the Packers should be moving back to a 3-4 defense. This scheme focuses on outside linebackers being a part of the pass rush. The 3-4 defense was last run under Joe Berry.

Packers Key Support Hires

While the coordinator roles are most important, the significance of the support staff matters. These are jobs that can impact major framework in game management and direction.

Some of the notable changes to the staff include Bobby Babich, Luke Getsy, and T.C. McCartney.

Babich is coming off the defensive coordinator position for the Buffalo Bills. The Packers also interviewed Babich for this position before hiring Jeff Hafley. Babich will serve as the secondary and pass coordinator.

While Luke Getsy has served the team in consultant and assistant roles, he is back in a way where he will be much more involved. Getsy was promoted to assistant head coach of the offense. He will also focus on leading Jordan Love as the Quarterbacks coach.

T.C. McCartney will be in the offensive quality control position. Most recently, McCartney coached Drake Maye in a season where he was an MVP finalist. McCartney has plenty of familiarity in the Kyle Shanahan system as he also worked for the 49ers.

Overall, the Packers have many new voices in the coaching room. After coming off a season that ended in disappointing fashion, change is necessary. Hopefully, the coaching changes bring new perspective and a fresh start to the 2026 season.
