Packers Make Move To Add Intriguing Defensive Piece
Sam Navarro-USA TODAY Sports

The Green Bay Packers put forth one of the most impressive performances in the NFL in Week 13. Hosting the Kansas City Chiefs at Lambeau Field on Sunday Night Football, Green Bay was able to pick up a 27-19 victory in what was an excellent all-around performance.

There were plenty of stars in the game, such as quarterback Jordan Love, who outdueled Patrick Mahomes and made NFL history in the process. Credit should also go to the defense, who was able to get timely stops when the team needed them most.

The turnaround defensively, along with Love’s increased production, has the Packers sitting at 6-6 and in the final Wild Card spot in the NFC heading into their Week 14 matchup against the New York Giants. Green Bay will also have a new addition to their defense for that game.

The team didn’t waste any time looking to shore things up defensively following their win over the Chiefs. On Monday, they were awarded defensive back David Long on waivers after he was cut by the Carolina Panthers over the weekend. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network shared the news.

The Packers will be the third franchise that Long plays for this season. He signed a one-year deal in free agency over the summer with the Las Vegas Raiders after spending the first four seasons of his career with the Los Angeles Rams.

When the Raiders began their overhaul, firing general manager Dave Zeigler, head coach Josh McDaniels and offensive coordinator Mick Lombardi, Long was released. He was picked up by the Carolina Panthers after. Long played in three games with the Panthers before they released him, as they also underwent a head coaching change last week.

With the Packers, Long could factor into the mix right away at cornerback. The team has been relying on rookie Carrington Valentine to fill the void left by Jaire Alexander, who has been sidelined since November 5th with a shoulder injury.

Eric Stokes has made one appearance this season, as he began the season on the PUP list and suffered a hamstring injury in his first game back. On top of that, the Packers also traded veteran Rasul Douglas to the Buffalo Bills ahead of the deadline.

Long has a shot to play right away behind Valentine, Corey Ballentine and slot corner Keisean Nixon. Keep an eye on former Packers safety Adrian Amos as well. He mutually agreed to part ways with the New York Jets over the weekend as well and has always been a favorite of head coach Matt LaFleur.
