The Packers went from one of the most consistently dominant teams through the season’s first two games, to having some significant errors cost Green Bay wins over the past two weeks in a loss to the Browns and 40-40 tie with the Dallas Cowboys.
Whether it was having a game-winning field goal blocked in Cleveland or a blocked extra point attempt in Dallas swinging the momentum towards the Cowboys, Packers head coach Matt LaFleur has seen just about enough of miscues on special teams.
“The glaring ones is the blocks, right? You got a blocked field goal, then you got a blocked PAT. Certainly, those were huge plays,” LaFleur recently told reporters.
“It’s never one play why you win or lose. Obviously, those were pretty big plays in the game. But we shuffled some personnel around. I thought it was really encouraging to see us hit a 53-yarder to send it into overtime and then to come back and hit a game-tying field goal in overtime. I think if we can just clean up those catastrophic errors – which, you know, that’s a big ‘if’ – we’ll be in a lot better spot.”
Even as the Packers have built a swarming defense, and an offense with the potential to be explosive both in the passing game and with Josh Jacobs powering the ground attack, Green Bay’s special teams have become their undoing.
How the Packers’ special teams units perform out of the bye week could be pivotal to Green Bay making a run over the remainder of the season.
