The Green Bay Packers did what it was supposed to do in Week 1 against the Detroit Lions, defeating the two-time defending NFC North champions at Lambeau Field by dominating them on both sides of the ball for a 27-13 victory.
The Packers’ offense took advantage of gaps and mistakes by Detroit’s stop unit, though, Green Bay’s rushing attack left much to be desired.
Running back Josh Jacobs led the way on the ground for the Packers with 66 rushing yards and a touchdown, but he needed 19 carries to get there. That checks out for only 3.5 rushing yards per attempt. Overall, Green Bay racked up 78 rushing yards on 25 carries for an average of 3.1 yards per attempt.
At the end of the day, the Packers came away with the win. Furthermore, Jacobs and fellow running back Chris Brooks got their flowers from head coach Matt LaFleur on Tuesday for excelling in another area.
Via Matt Schneidman of The Athletic:
LaFleur said Jacobs and Brooks in pass pro vs. the Lions was the best he’s seen from RBs in the seven seasons he’s been here.
Here’s another report from Paul Bretl of ESPN La Crosse 105.5FM:
“That was the best that I’ve seen in my time here,” LaFleur said of Jacobs and Brooks picking up blitzers.
Love’s pass protection was solid against the Lions. He went 14-of-17 for 170 passing yards when he was inside a clean pocket and also connected on four big-time throws, per Zach Kruse of Packers Wire. Overall, Love passed for 188 yards and two touchdowns with zero sacks and no turnovers while completing 16 of 22 throws.
