Packers must grapple with $13 million decision
Packers get major update on Christian Watson's injury 1 Green Bay Packers wide receiver Christian Watson (9) runs the ball in for a touchdown during a football game against the Chicago Bears on Dec. 7, 2025, at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wis. The Packers defeated the Bears 28-21.

The Packers, and general manager Brian Gutekunst have a major decision to weigh in the year ahead.

After selecting Matthew Golden and allowing Romeo Doubs to walk via free agency earlier this month, the future of quarterback Jordan Love’s receiving corps is in a bit of a state of flux.

An even bigger, potentially more impactful decision about the future of the position is looming large in Green Bay.

Packers’ Christian Watson among top NFL WRs in 2027

ESPN recently examined the top players expected to hit free agency next spring, with Packers wide receiver Christian Watson among the most coveted players expected to be available at his position in 2027.

“Since entering the league in 2022,” Matt Bowen writes for ESPN. “Watson has never played a full season due to injuries. But the 2025 tape tells us the arrow could be pointing up for him. With the 4.3 speed and vertical ability to threaten defenses, Watson is a proven target on the boundary who has averaged 17.3 yards per catch over his career.”

When healthy, Watson is the type of glue player who keeps the offense consistent, and seems to have a strong rapport with quarterback Jordan Love.

This past season, Watson, who is now entering the final year of a $13.5 million contract, caught 35 passes, matching a career-high 611 receiving yards and six touchdowns.

After allowing Doubs to walk, retaining Watson may become even more important, but how Golden develops in his second season and whether the Packers prioritize taking a receiver in the NFL Draft could telegraph where the 26-year-old is playing next season.

How Packers playmakers can put the NFC on notice 5 Green Bay wide receiver Christian Watson (9) makes a catch against Detroit Lions cornerback Amik Robertson (21) during the first half at Ford Field in Detroit on Thursday, Nov. 27, 2025.
