The Green Bay Packers will face off against the New England Patriots later today. This game could be a huge turning point in the season. With a win, the Packers stay competitive in a tight NFC North race; a loss could make it only possible for them to make the playoffs as a sixth or seventh seed. A win: the Packers could be buyers before the trade deadline on Tuesday. A loss: Green Bay could be sellers building for a possibly stronger year in 2027.
Needless to say, this game is extremely important in the grand scheme of things for this season.
So, what do the Packers need to do to win this game against New England and stay competitive in the NFC North?
Let’s find out:
The Packers defense has been great throughout the first half of this NFL season – and that’s saying something with all of the injuries the Packers have experienced on that side of the ball, and no Micah Parsons. How has Jonathan Gannon been doing it? The Green Bay defense is a smart one. Many of the plays are completely designed to fool opposing quarterbacks. These play designs will sometimes simulate pressure while other times, it will bring the pressure.
Green Bay has the fifth highest pressure rate in the NFL, and that will need to be utilized against the Patriots. Drake Maye’s pressure rate is 41% of all of his dropbacks this season. If the Packers can take advantage of that, that would make things easier for this defense. Dani Dennis-Sutton could have a “breakout” game in this one.
Dani Dennis-Sutton ranks 8th in the NFL and 2nd among rookies, with a 19.8% pressure rate.

The Patriots will be without top receivers AJ Brown and former Packers receiver Romeo Doubs. They have activated and presumably will have Mack Hollins, but the Patriots passing game will be hindered and that’ll be even truer if Green Bay can pressure Drake Maye.
Create pressue and stop the run game. Packers do that, then they’ll win and be one game closer to Micah Parsons coming back.
The offense has had its ups and downs. The running game is nonexistent. The offensive line is probably still the worst in the NFL. The receivers have dropitis. But…
Jordan Love is still on fire. Jordan Love leads the league in passing yards and has the fourth most passing touchdowns. With all of the adversity the offense has been experiencing, Love has stayed consistent. The good news: most of the issues on the offense can be fixed. Once those issues are resolved, and if Love can keep going at this rate, the Packers offense can be tops in the NFL. The Patriots pass defense is no joke but can be attacked through the air. If LaFleur can keep dialing up plays that can get receivers open, then Love can probably have a really great day.
Just stay consistent in the pass game.
The run game has been a mess since May. I don’t know if there is any way of fully repairing it, but the Packers need to figure out a way to simulate a run game. First, they need a run game to keep defenses honest in the play action game. Secondly, and probably a bigger issue, the offense needs to be able to close out games. Lacking a run game prevents that from happening and keeps other teams in it.
The Packers need to figure out a four minute offense and close out games.
If the Packers can do these things, then they should get the win in New England.
But regardless,
Go Pack Go!
