New incoming Green Bay Packers President Ed Policy has a clear set of goals for his tenure.
“Win football games, number one; keep the Packers in Green Bay, number two; and to strengthen our community, number three,” Policy said, via ESPN. “I’d say I even apply them in that order of priority. And so, really, every decision that we make here — to do something or not to do something — will be based on furthering one or more of those purposes.”
Lambeau Field remains a cathedral of American football, so the odds of the Packers leaving Green Bay seem pretty low, but, the futures of some of the franchise’s power brokers seems a bit less clear.Packers head coach Matt LaFleur has two years remaining on his curent contract and general manager Brian Gutekunst is signed through the end of the 2025 campaign.
Beyond that, well, it sounds like Price is putting Green Bay’s power structure under the microscope this season.
“I’m generally opposed — I’d never say never — [but] I’m generally opposed to a coach or GM going into the last year of their contract,” Policy said. “That creates a lot of issues. I think normally you have a pretty good idea of where that relationship is going when you have two years left — not always, but normally.
“So I think generally speaking I would avoid lame-duck status. It’s oftentimes difficult on everybody involved. But there are certain situations that probably call for it, so I would not say never.”
As it currently stands, if Price is in fact opposed to a coach entering the final year of his contract, this could well be an audition for LaFleur to earn a long-term extension.
Likewise, if the Packers falter this fall, it’s difficult to interpret Price’s comments any differently than Green Bay would consider moving on from LaFleur rather than having him coach through a lame duck season.
There’s a new decision-maker in Green Bay, and this Packers season could determine the trajectory of the franchise’s future.
