Packers president reveals his honest expectations for QB Jordan Love

Murphy addressed a fan who wrote in stating that he feels that others may have unrealistic expectations for Love in his first year as a starter. He asked Murphy to clarify what fans should really expect from the former 2020 first-round NFL Draft pick. Murphy responded:

“With regard to Jordan, I would tell our fans to remember that this will be his first year as a starter and that there will be a learning curve. That said, though, Jordan has benefited greatly by playing behind Aaron Rodgers for the last three years (much like Aaron learned from watching Brett Favre). Having watched him in practice for the past three years, I have seen significant growth in Jordan (particularly in his confidence) and think he is ready to play.

Also, he has benefited greatly by taking most of the snaps with the first-team offense in the last two offseasons, as well as in preseason games the last two years. Although it was very limited, his play in the Eagles game last year was very encouraging. I’ve also been very impressed with how Jordan has handled himself over the past three years. He never complained and continued to work hard to improve his game.

Most recently, I have seen Jordan step forward as a leader. There will be ups and downs this year, but it will be exciting, and we’re confident in Jordan.”

It is important to remember that the Packers went 6-10 in Rodgers’ first year as a starter. In Favre’s first full season as the starter, Green Bay was 9-7. Last year, they were 8-9 with Rodgers clearly not 100% bought into the team. While there will be ups and downs, the product on the field will be more authentic and the team will be more cohesive.

If one thing can be said for Rodgers in his later years, he embraced his role as Love’s mentor. For all of the conflict that he had with the front office, he never once took it out on his heir. There is a lot to be respected about that. It was a courtesy Favre never showed him. Love has not only learned from watching Rodgers but from picking his brain and listening to what he was to say.

He is as ready as he will ever be. Now we just have to wait and see.
