Packers QB Jordan Love – Abandoned at Sea

The Packers are set to welcome the Carolina Panthers to Lambeau Field tonight. Green Bay is coming off a frustrating loss littered with self-inflicted mistakes and questionable officiating. Tonight, against the Panthers, the message is pretty simple. It is time for the Packers to pick up their quarterback. Jordan Love is playing elite football despite the drops, poor offensive line play, a lackluster run game, and an unreliable rookie kicker.

The rest of the Packer roster, minus the defense, owes Jordan Love an apology. Jordan Love currently ranks second in the NFL is passing yards (1,958) and fourth in passing touchdowns (13). Love is putting up impressive numbers despite the Packers leading the league with 21 dropped passes through the first seven weeks. In the last two weeks alone, Josh Jacobs dropped a touchdown pass. Matthew Golden dropped two and Christian Watson also dropped a touchdown. Kirk Cousins leads the NFL with 16 touchdowns while Love has thrown 13. Imagine if those four dropped passes were caught.

Green Bay sits at 4-3 with a chance to improve to 5-3. Two of three losses had a familiar theme, poor officiating and self-inflicted mistakes. After the Detroit game, the NFL made it clear that improved officiating will not be arriving anytime soon. The quickest way to overcome that is to make plays. The Packers had multiple opportunities to overcome questionable officiating against the Vikings and the Lions but failed to capitalize.

Packers Must Play Cleaner Football

This seems to be a familiar theme with the Packers, sloppy football. The margin of error in the NFL is so slim that teams can only afford so many mistakes. For example, Lions Head Coach Dan Campbell went for it on 4th down with 4:53 left in the game from his won 24 yard. The Packers stopped the Lions. Then, Josh Jacobs dropped a touchdown pass and then Trey Smack missed the go ahead kick. The Lions were able to overcome that mistake and win the game. The Packers were not.

The Packers lead the league in penalties and have the worst rushing attack in the NFL. If Green Bay can reduce the penalties, they will give themselves a chance to succeed. On top of that, a little more consistency from the rushing attack will help as well. The Carolina Panthers defense is the worst rushing defense in the NFL. If there is a chance for the Packers to get the ground game rolling, it is tonight. Fewer penalties and an improved rushing attack will help Jordan Love and make his life a little easier.

The message is simple for the Packers – stop shooting yourself in the foot. Jordan Love is a playing at an impressive level. The level of the play, especially on the offensive side of the ball, needs to improve. If so, Green Bay has the chance to string together some wins and put themselves right back in the mix for the division.
