The Packers‘ defense is going to need to adjust in the wake of losing Micah Parsons to a torn ACL.
Much has been made of defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley now needing to dial up extra pressure, via the blitz, far more often than necessary, with Micah Parsons destroying folks en route to the quarterback on a consistent basis.
However, whether it’s while blitzing or winning his matchups up front, defensive end Rashan Gary is going to figure significantly into the Packers’ solution on defense to their sudden Parsons-sized problem ahead of the biggest games of the season.
Gary believes that there’s a simple fix for Green Bay, beginning Saturday night in Chicago against the Bears.
“Everybody just playing fast,” Gary told reporters, when asked about how the unit moves on. “Everybody still having that swagger, confidence and just understanding Micah made us better as a group, but understand that we’re still same players and still got the same group.”
While Gary enters Week 16 with just seven sacks, compared to Parsons’ 12.5, he has produced 47 quarterback pressures, and both numbers will need to rise significantly if Green Bay is going to survive this without skipping much of a beat.
“Just understanding what’s in front of us, understanding that we’ve still got the pen in our hand,” Gary said. “We can still write our story. Guys that’s been out the season – Tuck, D-Wy, (Parsons) – are going to be a reason why we’re going to finish strong, keeping those guys in mind.”
