As of Week 13, the only thing the Green Bay Packers knew about their Week 17 game was the opponent and location: the Baltimore Ravens, at Lambeau. The NFL had not yet unveiled the time or even the day. With regular season college football over, Saturdays become available for professional games and add to scheduling flux for potentially marquee matchups.
Of which Packers-Ravens could certainly be one on Saturday, December 27, when the game kicks off at 7:00 PM Central Time. Both teams could be playing for the division despite Baltimore’s current 6-7 record.
The Packers have played a lot of big games lately, and that’s not going to change. Thanksgiving was a huge road game in Detroit. The next week they played the Bears coming off Chicago’s statement win over the Eagles. This week, it’s the Broncos in Denver, where the Packers haven’t won since 2007.
Week 16 brings a date at Soldier Field, which could have even bigger stakes than the first Packers-Bears meeting depending on what each team does in the meantime.
The Ravens matchup follows. It might be easy to look at their sub-.500 record and brush off the game as not especially important. And it could end up that way. If the Ravens fall out of the AFC North race, they’ll have nothing to play for. They aren’t getting in as a wild card.
The way the Steelers are mucking along, however, Baltimore has plenty opportunity to remain in the running. If that’s the case, the Packers will get the best efforts of Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry leading a talented, if underperforming offense.
As long as the Bears keep looking like a legitimate playoff team, Green Bay will have its own hands full trying to maintain control of the division. Beating Chicago last week certainly has the Packers sitting pretty. ESPN gives them a 94% chance to make the playoffs and a 70% chance to win the division. Still, the job is far from over – Green Bay is 9-3-1 and Chicago sits 9-4. The Lions are still in the picture at 8-5. The Packers have the upper hand, but the NFC North isn’t decided.
First things first, it’s off to Denver. But at least now fans can start making plans for Saturday night just over two weeks from now. Week 18 in Minnesota (5-8), a much less interesting game if the Vikings are eliminated, remains TBD.
