Following the conclusion of the 2025 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers still had a few roster spots to fill. They are in the process of signing undrafted free agents, which is a good way to add depth and provide competition across the roster.
General Manager Brian Gutekunst is looking to keep strengthening the quarterback room. Malik Willis stepped in for Jordan Love while he recovered from a sprained MCL and went 2-0 as a starter, helping the Packers reach the postseason last year. It serves as a reminder of how competition and adding depth to the room can pay off in the long run.
Despite not selecting any quarterbacks in the 2025 NFL Draft, Green Bay is still doing its homework to ensure the position has adequate talent and competition.
According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, the Packers have invited former Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks quarterback Taylor Elgersma to attend their rookie minicamp. Elgersma had played exclusively Canadian football before earning invitations to American all-star events, including the Senior Bowl.
Elgersma delivered an impressive 2024 season, completing 73.8% of his throws for 4,252 yards, 35 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. His performance earned him the Hec Crighton Trophy, awarded to Canada's top college football player.
He is a poised pocket passer with good deep-ball accuracy and a natural ability to throw on the move. Elgersma also operates efficiently in RPOs, a cornerstone of Matt LaFleur’s offense.
Green Bay hosted Elgersma on a pre-draft visit as part of their evaluation process. While he is not the most athletically gifted quarterback, he offers good size. At Buffalo’s pro day, Elgersma measured 6-foot-5 and 227 pounds, posted a 25-inch vertical jump, covered 8 feet, 9 inches in the broad jump, and completed the three-cone drill in 7.95 seconds.
Malik Willis will enter the final year of his rookie contract, and the Packers will likely need a new backup for Jordan Love in the near future. Elgersma did not face the highest level of competition in college, but Green Bay appears interested in giving him a chance to make his case for the third-string quarterback role.
