Packers first-round pick Matthew Golden was knocked from Sunday’s loss to the Carolina Panthers, which could put added pressure on another receiver Green Bay chose during April’s NFL Draft.
With Jayden Reed still at least a few weeks from returning, and Golden’s timeline uncertain after Sunday’s injury, rookie Savion Williams may need to step up.
Head coach Matt LaFleur and Green Bay have struggled to find a role for Williams.
Though the former TCU standout’s first eight career games, Williams has caught just seven passes for 43 yards and a touchdown.
Sunday, in a loss to the Panthers, though, may have been the low water mark for Williams.
Pro Football Focus points out that Williams was lowest-graded Packer, with a meager 47.3 overall grade.
After tight end Tucker Kraft tore his ACL, head coach Matt LaFleur and the Packers are going to need to find creative ways to make explosive plays possible, and Williams’ versatility could make him an option to take on an expanded role in the offense.
However, that is going to require Williams pulling his weight, and making fewer mistakes, like his lost fumble against the Panthers.
There’s still a lot of football left to be played, and Williams’ career is just getting underway, but Green Bay’s season may hinge on him making a leap in the weeks ahead.
