The Green Bay Packers' 2025 draft was unusual for several reasons. They selected a wide receiver in the first round, ending a 22-year streak of not picking the position on Day 1. Additionally, they did not choose a defensive player until the fourth round.
Green Bay's 2025 draft class reflects the organization’s confidence in Jeff Hafley to develop defensive talent. The main focus, however, was on strengthening the offense and surrounding Jordan Love with the necessary weapons to succeed.
Among these weapons are receivers Matthew Golden and Savion Williams, two speedy playmakers who add versatility and excitement to Matt LaFleur's offense. With the right coaching, they have the potential to take Green Bay’s offense to the next level, and their talent has not gone unnoticed around the league.
In a recent conversation with NFL executives, Mike Sando of The Athletic gathered insights on the draft classes of NFC teams. Among the standout names was first-round pick Matthew Golden, with many executives offering strong praise for the rookie wide receiver added to Green Bay's roster.
"Golden is awesome," said an anonymous NFL executive. "He is their best receiver right now. I think he is really good, and he was the best receiver in the draft."
Williams' versatility stood out as a big talking point among sources around the league. His capability to line up anywhere on offense provides Matt LaFleur with numerous opportunities to get the ball in his hands.
“I love the kid," said another anonymous NFL executive about Williams. "He can do everything. He is tough, he can play running back, tight end, receiver. He is a joker, a great tool for somebody. You have to scheme him, but that is a big man who can run.”
The Packers came into the draft needing help at receiver. Christian Watson, their top man-coverage option, will not be back until December, and the team had the third-most drops in the league last season. Golden and Williams bring real promise, and if they can get up to speed quickly, they could give Green Bay’s receiver group the lift it needs heading into a season with championship expectations.
