The Green Bay Packers secondary is getting back to full strength as two players returned to practice on Sunday. Safeties Darnell Savage and Dallin Leavitt are back from injuries.

Savage has been in the NFL for four seasons playing in 46 games for the Packers. During his career he has made 199 tackles, with 28 passes defensed, along with eight total interceptions.

He injured his hamstring on Aug. 5 during Family Night at Lambeau Field.

When Savage was asked about his injury, he said,” The hardest thing is just being patient,” Savage said. “I want to be out there with my brothers. It’s really difficult, but at the same time, I gotta be smart for them, too. They did a good job of staying in my ear and told me it’s bigger than just right now. I just try to stay the course and get better every day.”

While Savage has been out safety Shawn Davis had had to step up in his absence getting some time in the preseason entering his first season. Also, Micah Abernathy has come along providing some help as the team’s third leading tackler when the preseason concluded. Based on the young safeties’ performances Savage gave some insight as to what he felt is key coming into the season.

“They did a great job,” Savage said. “That’s something I feel like we’ve been talking about that in our room for so long now – just the next-guy-up mentality. It trickles throughout. Those guys, they came in and attacked the day perfect.”

Darnell Savage is heading into his second practice on Monday since injuring his hamstring.

Leavitt had his first game action with the Packers during the final preseason game against the 49ers. He suffered a shoulder injury after forcing a fumble. It was said by Leavitt to be the “worst pain” he had ever experienced.  Matt Lafleur stated to the media following the injury that the former Raider safety would be “out for a while”.

When Dallin Leavitt was asked about how he thinks his teammates reacted he said, “I think that most people probably felt that way in the building, as well, that (I) was going to be out for a while,” said Leavitt, who wore a shoulder harness during practice. “I just can’t live like that; you know what I mean? I’m not OK with being out, so I’m going to do everything I can to get back.”

Leavitt has played an important role in punt coverage on specials teams for the Green Bay Packers, only returning to practice just two weeks after injury.

Adrian Amos, another Packers starting safety was put in place while Leavitt was recovering from his injury.

When Savage was asked about how his return to practice was, he said,” I love the pace we’re at right now,” Savage said. “Just keep communicating, being on the same page and just growing closer and closer. I feel like that’s the biggest thing for us. I feel like we have a very special locker room.”

Hopefully the Packers continue to get healthy before the season opener against the Vikings on Sept. 11. The roster cut deadline is Tuesday.
