Dak Prescott and the Cowboys’ vertical passing game raised some red flags about the Packers’ secondary in Sunday night’s 40-40 tie, but defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley may have even bigger problems on his hands.
Even with CeeDee Lamb sidelined, Prescott and the Cowboys capped Sunday’s game with 319 passing yards on the way to 436 yards of total offense amid the 40-point outburst that raises major questions about if the Packers’ defense can be the backbone of a championship-caliber run.
Over at NFL Media, Grant Gordon was surprised that Hafley’s defense folded, in a pretty big game aiming to bounce back from a loss the prior week.
“Dallas’ defense allowed a season high in points to a third straight opponent,” Gordon writes. “But that’s not all that surprising. Green Bay’s woes were, especially considering the Cowboys were without all-world wideout CeeDee Lamb and two starting offensive linemen. For all the pomp and circumstance surrounding Micah Parsons’ return to Dallas-Fort Worth, he battled through a back injury to turn in a game-high seven pressures, three tackles, three QB hits and Green Bay’s only sack (which was for no gain).
“Every unit can have an off game, but after three weeks of imposing, tone-setting performances, the Packers defense had a very bad night that negated a rather sterling showing from Jordan Love and the offense.”
Fortunately for Hafley and Green Bay’s defense, the Packers enter the bye at 2-1-1, with games against the Cincinnati Bengals and Arizona Cardinals offering an opportunity to right the ship defensively and shore up some of the areas that led to the Cowboys’ offensive explosion on Sunday night.
