The Green Bay Packers lost much more than the game to the Chicago Bears in their crucial divisional matchup Saturday night. This Jordan Love injury wasn’t the only major loss of the evening. Already without some of their best talents, such as tight end Tucker Kraft and defensive end Micah Parsons, the team is getting dangerously thin. Blowing a lead to lose 22-16 in overtime, the Packers allowed the Bears to take control of the NFC North. Losing their starting quarterback during the game due to a concussion, the Packers’ foundational players are crumbling as the season progresses.
The Packers were up 3-0 early in the second quarter of a windy afair. It may not have been a flawless masterpiece, but NFL fans couldn’t ask for more excitement. Love started a drive from his own 17-yard line, looking to increase the small lead. Things went from bad to worse with 8:15 left in the half.
After already being penalized for this earlier in the game, Bears’ defensive end Austin Booker was flagged a second time for roughing the passer. This head-on collision left Love lying on the ground, who was aided to the medical tent. Moments later, he was seen walking to the locker room, not to play another snap in the game. Backup quarterback Malik Willis finished the job for the Packers.
Pouring salt on the wound, the Packers had a couple of other serious health concerns in this game. Outside of the Love injury, Tight end John FitzPatrick left the game with an Achilles injury, and wide receiver Romeo Doubs also left the game. Doubs injured his wrist while failing to recover the late onside kick that led to the Bears’ victory.
ESPN reports on comments from Packers head coach Matt LaFleur after the game. “It’s always tough in this league to have to rebound and get it together, but that’s exactly what we have to do and that’s exactly what we will do to get ready for a tough Baltimore team,” said LaFleur. The team will wait until later in the week to provide an update on his status for next week.
Fumbles, costly penalties, a successful onside kick, and a two-minute drill from the Bears to tie the game; this one had it all. Fans in Chicago of a certain age are feeling better than ever about their team. The 11-4 record puts them in control of the division, with the Packers in second at 9-5-1. Teams will say injuries are no excuse, but there’s no denying that this considerably dampens their playoff projections.
