Packers Urged to Make High-Impact Move Late in NFL Free Agency

Heading into the 2025 NFL season, the Green Bay Packers look to have the talent necessary to be a potential Super Bowl contender in the NFC. Over the last two years, they have been a potential contender, but haven’t been able to win the tough games in the playoffs.

Looking at the roster, the Packers are mostly set with great talent. However, there are a couple of areas that general manager Brian Gutekunst could still look to improve.

One of those areas happens to be at cornerback.

After an offseason full of Jaire Alexander rumors and reports, Green Bay opted to release the longtime star cornerback. With that move, there is a hole that could ruin the team’s chances of winning a championship. It would be wise for Gutekunst to pursue another legitimate starter in the secondary.

Keeping that in mind, a potential option has been named who could replace Alexander.

Mike Luciano of Lombardi Ave has suggested that the Packers should sign veteran free agent cornerback Stephon Gilmore. He could step in immediately as a starter and help fill the void left by Alexander’s release.

“The Packers have some money to spend, and this front office seems much more willing to splash the cash for external free agents than past regimes,” Luciano wrote. “That could lead to them finally striking a balance that ends up with Gilmore swapping out the horn on the side of his helmet for Packers green and gold.”

Gilmore would be a big-time pickup for Green Bay. What would make his fit with the team even better is that the Packers would not have to give him a long-term deal. There is a very good chance they could sign him to a team-friendly one-year contract.

During the 2024 NFL season, Gilmore played with the NFC North rival Minnesota Vikings. He was a key part of their defense and has surprisingly gone unsigned this offseason.

He played in 15 games, racking up 56 total tackles to go along with an interception and nine defended passes. Gilmore has been a playmaking threat in the secondary throughout his entire career, although he has slowed down some over the last few years.

If Green Bay wants to make a high-impact move late in the offseason, the front office should look no further than Gilmore. He may not completely replace what Alexander was capable of, but he would be a quality addition who could help make the back-end of the defense much better for second-year defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley.
