Packers Urged to Make Major Contract Move Before it’s Too Late

The Green Bay Packers are not known as a team that spends a whole lot of money on free agents, but they do tend to take care of their own players.

Well, the Packers have numerous key players who are in need of contract extensions heading into 2025, and perhaps none are more important than offensive lineman Zach Tom.

Tom is probably Green Bay’s most versatile player in the trenches, capable of playing every position along the offensive line and doing so at an impressive level, as well.

The 26-year-old became eligible for a new deal this offseason, and while the Packers haven’t moved on it yet, Freddie Boston of Lombardi Ave feels they need to act now.

“It’s time to pay him,” Boston wrote. “Tom is entering a contract year and will likely, at some point, become one of the highest-paid tackles in the NFL. He doesn’t deserve to face any unnecessary uncertainty over his future.”

Boston also wonders if the Tom situation could become messy if Green Bay doesn’t rectify things sooner rather than later.

“To this point, Tom has shown no indications of holding out. He participated fully in the offseason program, but the Packers can’t afford to take that for granted. Jordan Love did the same a year ago before ‘holding in’ — he attended training camp but didn’t practice until he had finalized a new contract,” Boston added.

The Packers originally selected Tom in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He became a full-time starter for Green Bay in 2023, and last season, he cemented himself as an elite tackle, posting an 87.5 overall grade at Pro Football Focus. That ranked fourth among all qualifying offensive tackles.

We’ll see if general manager Brian Gutekunst is able to get something done with Tom promptly.
