Packers WR Amari Rodgers named as potential trade candidate
Will Green Bay Packers wide receiver Amari Rodgers still be with the team when the 2022 season kicks off? MARK HOFFMAN/MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL via Imagn Content Services, LLC

Amari Rodgers was the third-round draft pick of the Green Bay Packers in 2021. To say that his rookie campaign was underwhelming would be an understatement. Rodgers had just four receptions for 45 yards and no touchdowns. He also had 20 returns for 166 yards before losing the role due to his many mistakes on the field. Now Davante Adams and Marquez Valdes-Scantling are gone, but the Packers also added Sammy Watkins and three rookie wide receivers. With Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb each returning, there may not be room for Rodgers if he does not show improvement during training camp.

Amari Rodgers Was Named as a Trade Candidate by Bleacher Report

In an article about three Packers players that could be traded during training camp, Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine named Amari Rodgers as one of them. In the article, Ballentine mentions that the receivers listed above have made the wide receiver room quite crowded. Last year, the Packers kept six wide receivers on the roster. As Ballentine wrote:

"That only leaves so many roster spots, and Amari Rodgers might have the most trade value if the Packers don’t believe he will make the roster. The former Clemson standout was a third-round pick in the 2021 draft but mostly worked as a returner last season.

"If there’s a team that’s willing to give up a pick to take a shot on him, it would make sense for the Packers to listen."

Would Trading Rodgers Be the Right Move?

The Packers certainly have a great deal of potential in the wide receiver room. However, as Aaron Rodgers recently stated, “Production is more important than potential.” Amari Rodgers did not have a productive season last year, that much we know. However, if Randall Cobb is to be believed, the second-year wide receiver is going to be very exciting this year.

Amari Rodgers himself recently revealed what led to his down year as a rookie. Having remedied the issue, he is poised for a big season. Ryan Fowler of The Draft Network even selected Rodgers as one of his candidates for breakout candidates on the Packers roster.

Of course, there is also the future to think about. While the three rookie wide receivers provide a good, young base, Lazard, Cobb and Watkins are all on one-year deals or in the last year of their contract. Despite rumors that the Packers have identified their replacement for Davante Adams and will sign him via free agency, Green Bay also needs to make sure they can keep multiple quality receivers on the roster. If Rodgers shows out during training camp, he may be too valuable to the future for the Packers to move.
