Pair of quarterbacks make their way to Raiders in sixth round

The Las Vegas Raiders have made their choice at quarterback, but how they did it is nothing short of surprising.

With the 213th pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, the Raiders selected Montana State quarterback Tommy Mellott. Shortly after, with the 215th pick in the Draft, the team selected North Dakota State quarterback Cam Miller

The way the Raiders have gone about their quarterback situation is controversial, given how many opportunities they had to draft the likes of Shedeur Sanders and Kyle McCord. Miller did have a top-30 visit with the team, however, and Mellott picked up plenty of steam as a late-round pick in the weeks leading to the draft. It is uncertain what this means for the Raiders, but head coach Pete Carroll must have a plan in mind for this.

What Mellott and ??? brings to the Raiders

Although the Raiders drafted two quarterbacks, perhaps there is a way to move one to a different position.

The winner of the Walter Payton Award for best offensive player in the FCS, Mellott impressed as quarterback for Montana State. While his size and arm strength likely do not equal a NFL quarterback, Mellott showcased impressive athleticism at his Pro Day, leading teams to consider him as a potential transition candidate to wide receiver. Not every quarterback-to-receiver switch is going to lead to Julian Edelman, but offensive coordinator Chip Kelly can help smooth things over and develop him as he plays behind a suddenly-deep receiving group.

Miller, on the other hand, is certainly expected to stick at quarterback. One of the top quarterbacks at the Shrine Bowl, Miller showcased serious potential at the next level, despite not facing elite competition at the FCS level. He will definitely need development time, and he will get it with Geno Smith and Aidan O’Connell on the roster to avoid playing him earlier than necessary.

It was not the quarterback solution anyone anticipated the Raiders looking towards, but they at least have something going for next season.
